My Story

From the heart of the tree

Darren’s earliest childhood memories was the love of fixing things. His first memory was taking apart a new transistor radio only to find it never worked after he put it back together, he was only 6 years old.

His early years were spent in the Yorkshire woodlands making bow and arrows from Native Yew trees then onto the woodworking class at school which he excelled in making his first dovetailed Mahogany Cabinet.

From then he went on to his professional career as a wood machinist for various Joinery companies in Sheffield England and in 1989 emigrating to New Zealand

A young 22 year old arriving on the shores of New Zealand was pretty adventurous back then and straight into working for a large innovative Auckland Furniture manufacturer. His love for design took him on a new quest and joined the Auckland School of Architecture as a woodwork tutor.

After many years at the University he took a new turn in his career and became a well known Timber salesman throughout Auckland. His knowledge of Timber grew rapidly and with it his passion for furniture design. After designing his dream home in the Coromandel he went on to full time building and furniture design. in 2011 he and his partner decided to live on a 50 acre block and live a sustainable life growing food and using the trees off the land to build furniture. Many pieces came out of his country workshop and was welcomed as a new member to the Far North Mangonui Art Gallery.

In 2018 he moved down to Whangarei and opened in new workshop in Glenbervie and had art pieces sold in local galleries Helena Bay and Burning Issues ,Town Basin.

March 2021 a new workshop is born, bigger better in Taiharuru, Whangarei
